UvA and ESnet are cooperating to investigate the contribution of carbon emissions of networking infrastructure. Our first common result has been a model for the various contributions of networking devices. Together we developed a tool where we applied this model to user specified data transfer scenarios. This tool was demonstrated for the first time at SuperComputing 2013 in Denver, and we plan to show an improved and extended version at TNC 2014.

11 - Open Cloud eXchange (OCX): Architecture, Components, and Demo Scenario.

The proposed poster presents on-going development of Open Cloud eXchange (OCX) as a part of the GN3plus JRA1 Task 2 "Network Architectures for Cloud Services" research work. The OCX intends to provide a solution for interconnecting the two major components of the cloud services infrastructure: Cloud Service Provider (CSP) infrastructure; and cloud access and delivery infrastructure which in many cases requires dedicated local network infrastructure and quality of services that cannot be delivered by the public Internet infrastructure. One of the OCX design principle is that the OCX remains neutral to actual cloud services provisioning and limits its services to Layer 0 through Layer 2 to remain transparent to current cloud services model. The OCX is considered as an important components of the Federated Intercloud infrastructure and intends to support dynamic inter-cloud connectivity and security association establishment. In this way, the OCX can be naturally integrated with the GEANT federated network and services access.

Architecturally and functionally, the OCX includes the following services and functional components: physical PoPs for providers and customers, L0-L2 network interconnection facility (optionally also connectivity with dedicated optical links), supporting TTP services to support dynamic peering, business/service and trust relations establishment, auditing.

The poster will explain and illustrate the main OCX design principles, its place in the general Federated Intercloud Architecture, and describe the currently being prepared demo that will demonstrate the benefits of OCX running on the GEANT network for dynamic inter-cloud resources allocation and guaranteed network QoS delivery.

The demo scenario will show (1) the benefit of using OCX for establishinghigh speed connectivity between big data source/archive and cloud datacenter; (2) the possibility of rapid connectivity and computational task relocation between OCX members as well as new cloud providers inclusion.

The goal of presenting the proposed poster is to make wider networking community aware of advanced research in GN3plus project and initiate discussion about new cloud aware and cloud powered networking and services infrastructure to respond to the demands from the research and academic community in Europe and worldwide.
